Alpha Release: Cycle 6 – 5th Alpha Preview / Release Candidate 0

We are releasing a new preview of Cycle 6 to the Alpha channel. This series of builds will be the next major feature release of the Xamarin Platform when they release to Stable later this year. These builds are also the first Release Candidate we are publishing as part of a newly launched RC process, which you can read more about here.

If you are used to the updater channels in Xamarin Studio and/or Visual Studio, simply switching to the Alpha channel and getting the latest content will give you the RC0 series of builds. To make it as easy as possible for Xamarin developers to participate in this first RC, we’ve also prepared special versions of our installers which will install the new RC0 build on your Mac and Windows machine.

Mac Installer  |  Windows Installer

Please note, to use RC0 to develop iOS applications in Visual Studio, you’ll need to install the release on both your Mac and Windows workstations.

The biggest change with the Cycle 6 builds is an overhaul of how Xamarin builds iOS projects on your Mac from Visual Studio. If you happen to experience issues with any of the RC0 products, please log a bug report

Known Issues

  • [Xamarin.VS] – Xamarin.VS fails to log into build server on Mac machines using El Capitan GM (beta 1).
  • [Xamarin.VS] – Right clicking build host in XMA connection dialog does not successfully open context menu.
  • [Xamarin.VS] – Breakpoint positions sometimes change when debugging Android applications with multiple breakpoints.
  • [Xamarin.VS] – When deleting a theme with the Android Designer, it sometimes does not properly remove it. Applying the theme again may cause Visual Studio to hang/restart.
  • [Xamarin.VS] – In some instances, the license window cannot be dismissed.

Preview: Xamarin Profiler 0.23

Xamarin Profiler preview 0.23 is now available for download! There have been a number of fixes since our previous preview, which have been noted below.

Please note that the Mac app bundle has been renamed (from XamarinProfiler.Mac.app to “Xamarin Profiler.app”), so the old version needs to be removed before installing this new update, so that Xamarin Studio prompts the user for the new location.

Issues Addressed

  • 33816 – Extended detail pan should now properly become greyed out in drill-down mode for the Call-Tree view.
  • 32405 – Cleaned up most instances of unknown classes showing in the ‘Summary’ and ‘Allocations List’ views.
  • 34390 – Graphs should now be properly selectable when running the profiler.
  • 33974 – Labels for .mlpd files should now correctly show when opening them.

Preview: Xamarin.iOS support for iOS 9.1 Beta, watchOS2 & tvOS

We are releasing preview versions of Xamarin Studio and Xamarin.iOS with updated support for the recently released iOS 9.1 Beta 3. These builds also support watchOS 2 (simulator only) and tvOS (simulator and device only).

As with all our preview releases, this is not a product we officially support. If you encounter any issues, we recommend filing a bug in Bugzilla. You can also jump into the discussions on the forum thread posted below.

Known Issues

  • [Xamarin.iOS] – watchOS 2 and tvOS APIs are not final, some types might be missing or unavailable.
  • [Xamarin.iOS] – For device builds (both iOS and AppleTV) you must disable incremental builds in the project’s options.
  • [Xamairn.iOS] – Bitcode support is not enabled on any platform.
  • [Xamarin.iOS] – No storyboard support for tvOS projects with the iOS Designer or Xcode 7.1.
  • [Xamairn.iOS] – tvOS MetalGame template gives a System.InvalidOperationException on launching AppleTV.
  • [Xamairn.iOS] – watchOS 2 and watchOS 1 applications currently only work on watch simulators.
  • [Xamarin.iOS] – watchOS debugging is supported only for default mode in watch simulator.
  • [Xamarin.iOS] – iOS template projects currently work on 32 bit devices.
  • [Xamarin.iOS] – iOS SpriteKitGameTemplate sometimes gives build errors.
  • [Xamarin.VS] – Visual Studio support is not yet available.

Alpha Release: Cycle 6 – 4th Alpha Preview

We are releasing a new preview of Cycle 6 to the Alpha channel. This series of builds will be the next major feature release of the Xamarin Platform when they release to Stable later this year. We wanted to release these builds to a wider audience for consumption via the Alpha channel.

As this is an Alpha release there are bound to be bugs. Please make sure to use the forums below to read up on issues as they are found, and see if any workarounds exist, or log a bug if one doesn’t exist already.

Important Notes

  • [Xamarin Studio / Xamarin.VS] – The Cycle 6 builds now require Xcode 7 or higher. For example, attempting to build an iOS app for device using Xcode 6.4 will now fail with “Native linking failed, undefined symbol:___divdc3”.
  • [Xamarin.VS] – Support for OS X 10.9 Mavericks has been deprecated. The Cycle 6 builds will now require OS X 10.10 Yosemite.

Known Issues

  • [Xamarin.VS] – Exception when opening interface.storyboard file for a WatchKit project in Visual Studio, when using Xcode7.

Preview: Android M Support – 3rd Preview

We are releasing our third preview with support for Google’s Android M SDK. This build supports the Android M Preview 3 released by Google on August 17th.

There is no target stable date for M support at this time, as we have to wait until Google finalizes and publishes their support before we can release ours. That being said, we may do additional M preview releases between now and the final Google release, so be sure to check back and see if newer versions become available in the coming weeks.

As with all our preview releases, this is not a product we officially support. If you encounter any issues, we recommend filing a bug in Bugzilla. You can also jump into the discussions on the forum thread posted below.

Preview: WatchOS 2.0

We are releasing our first preview with support for Apple’s watchOS 2.0 with new iOS 9 packaging features such as app thinning, on-demand resources, and data asset catalogs.

Note that this preview is not necessary to use new iOS 9 APIs. Those API updates are included in Xamarin.iOS 8.13, which is currently available from the Xamarin alpha channel.

This is an early preview and is still in active development. Not all features are complete and it has not been tested to the same level as our other releases. Nonetheless, if you find any problems that are not listed in the known issues please report them in Bugzilla!

Known Issues

  • WatchOS 2 apps fail to compile for device. Only simulator is supported in this preview.
  • Debugging watchOS 2 apps is not yet supported.
  • On-demand resources do not load during local development.
  • The Publishing Wizard does not support app thinning.
  • The on-demand resource tags field in the property grid is not updated when the build action is changed.
  • There is no way to set Initial Install and Prefetch resource tags.
  • The UI design for Data Sets in Asset Catalogs is not finalized.
  • If you choose to add a ComplicationController from the project wizard, it will not compile unless you implement its abstract members.
  • iOS projects show an incorrect “incompatible framework” error for the WatchKit app.
  • The iOS Project Options panel for WatchKit app extensions shows several invalid options.
  • The UI incorrectly allows adding source code and assembly references to WatchKit apps. Code must be in the WatchKit extension.
